Sree Mookambika Institute of Medical Sciences established the Department of Nephrology in 2010, catering to the population of Kanyakumari, Tirunelveli, Thenkasi and Tutucorin  district and nearby places of Trivandrum district.

 A great amount of effort and detail has gone into formulating infection control guidelines, adequate infrastructure, and hiring highly trained paramedical staff to make this centre one of the best dialysis units in this rural region

It has one of the largest and finest Hemodialysis unit in the region.

The unit has been recognised as one of the best centres in the south Tamil Nadu and set as example to other centres by the Tamil Nadu Chief Minister’s Health scheme.

It has dedicated Nephrologists, Medical doctors, Dialysis technicians, Dialysis nurses and ancillary staff.

The haemodialysis unit has presently 23 state-of –art machines , Separate machines for Serology negative and positive patients and two RO Plants, along with Portable RO machine. The unit runs 4 shifts and performs approximately 1800-2000 dialysis per month both for outpatients and inpatients.

Dialysis facility address the need of patients of all age groups especially children & elderly with 24X7 services

In case of emergency, dialysis is available round the clock with facilities to conduct dialysis in all the intensive care units as well as emergency medicine department where various procedures like Heparin free haemodialysis,  Slow low efficiency dialysis, Charcoal hemoperfusion, and Plasmapheresis is done.

Reuse of dialysers is done using the reprocessing machines and taken up according to the fibre bundle volume.

 In 2017, the department had started live related donor renal transplantation, and kidney transplantation is now performed routinely at relatively affordable cost, without causing heavy financial burden for the low income patients.
